Getting there

We found no nonstop flight from New York (JFK) in late April, so plan on one connection. A nonstop would take about 7.5 hours; with a connection allow several hours more.

Biarritz has year-round flights from London Stansted and Paris (Charles de Gaulle and Orly); Bordeaux has flights from London Gatwick and Luton and Paris Charles de Gaulle. No North American or Tel Aviv flights are listed.

Most North American travelers fly to Paris and continue by a short flight to Biarritz or by fast train to Dax or Bayonne.

Routes come from each airport’s published route list, checked October 2026. Flight times are estimates from the distance. Airlines change schedules, so confirm before you book (route list we used).

From the airport

  • Biarritz Pays Basque Airport (BIQ): about 45 minutes by carThe closest airport, a small one with flights from Paris and London.
  • Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport (BOD): about 1.8 hours by carA larger airport to the north with more European flights.

Late April weather

Daytime highs are around 63°F (17°C) and nights around 46°F (8°C); the Atlantic is cold at about 57°F (14°C), so swimming needs a wetsuit.

Good to know

  • France is 6 hours ahead of New York.
  • The currency is the euro.
  • You'll need a rental car here; the coast is spread out and public transport is limited.
  • US passport holders can visit for short stays without a visa, but Europe is introducing an online travel approval, so check entry rules for your passport.

Safety and travel advisories

What governments say about travel to this country. Nothing here is this site’s own judgment.

US State Department travel advisory for France

Level 2 of 4: Exercise increased caution

  • Reasons the advisory gives: terrorism and civil unrest.
  • The level is for the whole country, not for the hotel or its neighborhood. Level 1 is the lowest of the four and Level 4 the highest.
  • Advisory dated May 27, 2025; I read it on October 4, 2026. Levels change, so open the advisory before you book and again before you fly.

This is the governments’ own wording, not a rating by this site. Israel’s National Security Council also publishes travel warnings for Israelis abroad. Ask the operator what security the program itself arranges, such as guards and entry checks.
