Getting there

There is a nonstop flight from New York (JFK), about 7.5 hours in the air.

Faro lists year-round nonstops from Toronto, London (Gatwick, Luton and Stansted) and Paris (Orly), plus a Newark flight marked seasonal that may not have started by late April. Lisbon, about two and a half hours away by highway, lists year-round nonstops from all nine cities (London from Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted; Paris from Charles de Gaulle and Orly).

North American travelers usually fly nonstop to Lisbon and then drive, take the train or take a short flight south, or connect in a European hub straight into Faro.

Routes come from each airport’s published route list, checked October 2026. Flight times are estimates from the distance. Airlines change schedules, so confirm before you book (route list we used).

From the airport

  • Faro Airport (FAO): about 15 minutes by carThe Algarve's airport, just west of Olhão.
  • Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS): about 2.8 hours by carFar more flights, including nonstops from North America; a straightforward highway drive.

Late April weather

Sunny and mild, with highs around 70°F (21°C) and nights near 55°F (13°C); the sea is about 63°F (17°C), cold for swimming.

Good to know

  • Portugal is five hours ahead of New York.
  • The currency is the euro.
  • US passport holders do not need a visa for a short stay, but check whether the European ETIAS travel authorization is required by the time you travel.
  • The hotel is on the waterfront in town, so the markets and island ferries are walkable; a car helps for the rest of the Algarve.

Safety and travel advisories

What governments say about travel to this country. Nothing here is this site’s own judgment.

US State Department travel advisory for Portugal

Level 1 of 4: Exercise normal precautions

  • The level is for the whole country, not for the hotel or its neighborhood. Level 1 is the lowest of the four and Level 4 the highest.
  • Advisory dated December 22, 2025; I read it on October 4, 2026. Levels change, so open the advisory before you book and again before you fly.

This is the governments’ own wording, not a rating by this site. Israel’s National Security Council also publishes travel warnings for Israelis abroad. Ask the operator what security the program itself arranges, such as guards and entry checks.
